Yoga Therapy in Russia

Russian doctors have set up yoga research institutes and many are starting to use yoga for treating disease. Prof. M. Sarkisov-Serazini, a specialist in remedial gymnastics, recommended yogic breathing in his book Man Must be Healthy. Dr Anatoli Medvetsky, a children's surgeon at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow, prescribes simple yogasanas for sick children. Konstantin Buteiko of Novosibirsk uses yogic techniques for the prevention and treatment of serious diseases including bronchial asthma, epilepsy, angina pectoris and high blood pressure. He tested bronchial asthmatics and found an improper balance between the amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide entering their body. He then gave them yogic breathing exercises instead of medicine: and it worked. So far he has had excellent results with over 10,000 patients applying yogic methods for treatment of different diseases.
