Medicine in the 1980's

Dr Swami Nadamurti Saraswati, MB, BS (Melb.)

Medical therapy has been traditionally characterized by people waiting to become ill. They visit a doctor, naturopath, homoeopath, herbalist, chiropractor or acupuncturist (according to their belief), receive therapy for their acute condition, and subsequently resume their usual activities and lifestyle.

These methods have, in general, been effective in short term problems. However, they are often found to be wanting in long term or chronic conditions which include arthritis, asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, migraine, tension headaches, anxiety and depression.

It is well known that the long term use of drugs does not cure the above mentioned problems but merely suppresses or alleviates the symptoms. In fact, the ever-increasing use of drugs is producing a growing incidence of iatrogenic (drug-induced) diseases and the healing professions, together with the general public, are slowly becoming conscious of this situation.

An awareness is developing all around us that good health is not a matter of luck, but is due to good management. Therefore a simple, effective and practical system of health education is necessary to cater for the growing numbers of dynamically-minded individuals who desire to gain control over the vicissitudes of personal health and disease.

Such a system consists of harmonious practice of asanas, pranayamas, yoga nidra, meditation and karma yoga. It also incorporates internal cleansing methods. Using a specific combination of these techniques helps us not only to overcome any present physical, emotional and mental problems, but also strengthens our inner vitality and individual energy. This gives us a greater capacity to resist and cope with any physical illnesses or potentially destructive situations. This system of yoga is the need of today and more teachers must be trained to disseminate these techniques throughout the world. Along with this everyone must be urged to become aware of all the different methods of keeping healthy and eliminating disease so that the most suitable one can be used for any situation.
